Snapchat has made a deal with Sony Music Entertainment to include music from leading record label artists in the app’s licensed music library.

The deal means Snapchat now has partnerships in place with the Big Three labels.

In addition to the three major labels, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, Snap’s music partners include members MERLIN, major publishers Sony Music Publishing, Universal Music Publishing Group and Warner Chappell, as well as Kobalt, BMG, the NMPA members, DistroKid, and what Snap says are “thousands of individual songwriters / music publishers”.

Snapchat’s Sounds feature, which allows users to add music to their Snaps, launched in October 2020.

Snapchat reports that videos created with music from Sounds on the platform have collectively generated nearly 1.2 billion videos created and nearly 77 billion views.

Snapchat also states that more than 200 million users use the augmented reality features of its platform every day and that it will now extend the music experience on the app by adding sounds in its AR lenses available in the ” Lens Carousel ”from the app.

Additionally, Snapchat announces that it will soon roll out features such as “Sound Lenses” with a preset song built into the Lens, “a Lens that transforms anyone’s images to appear as if they are singing a song.” , and “Cameo Sound Lenses,” which the company said “will apply visual effects to make you and a friend the star of your own animated music video.”

The social media platform says its new sound lenses “will produce a more immersive music experience and open up a proven and powerful way for artists to share music on Snapchat.”

Sony Music has previously used Snap’s AR tools in a partnership that saw an AR lens used to support the launch of Kygo’s collaboration with Whitney Houton for her all-new version of Stronger love.

Other Lenses in partnership with Sony Music artists include Calvin Harris and Rag’n’Bone Man’s Giant, which Snapchat says has generated 90 million creations and 1 billion views; and G-Eazy and Halsey’s He and I, which generated 61 million creations and 750 million views.
